For a garage attached or detached from your house of around 18 x 24 feet most popular width for a garage door is 16 feet. For a shed the best size for installing a garage door is 8 x 14 feet. These garage doors are intended for safety and security of multiple vehicles or larger vehicles. For example in areas where golf cart transportation is popular garage doors are usually available to suit these small vehicles.

Smaller sizes can be found. Many home builders do not consider this a structural necessity but a style and price choice for the homeowner. A standard double garage door measures 16 by 7 14 by 7 and 12 by 7 feet. Then the garage door would be 6 x 6 6.

If you are renovating your garage to create more storage space avoid single car garage door size. If the door is an odd size it might be beneficial to alter or change the framing on the garage instead of ordering a custom door which can be expensive. If you have an rv the door can go up to 10 feet. Many 16 x 7 garage doors will be designed with a pair of single 8 foot garage door bays separated by a central post or column.
